Welcome to my planet

Nice to meet you!

“I dedicate my life to the pursuit of truth. Wherever I may be, I sincerely cherish this mysterious, fresh, and lovely world.”

Bella Chen

Born in 2000

Hi, My name is Bella Chen

I love reading, design and thinking. I have 7 years of experience in art (including high school and university) and hold a bachelor's degree in Design from China. Currently, I am pursuing a Master's degree in Computer Science (CS) at the University of Waterloo, Canada. My research focuses on human-computer interaction (HCI), particularly on designing human-centered products. I take pride in my design skills, creative ideas, and hands-on capabilities.  I am learning how to become an excellent industrial designer and HCI researcher.

  • Slide Template Access

I have created several slide templates that I often use for presentations. I am happy to share these templates with you for free, as long as you credit the source. (Jan 1, 2025 Updated)

  • Book Reviews

Books allow us to stand on the shoulders of giants to contemplate the future. I enjoy reflecting on the content of certain books and am curious about how others interpret this knowledge. Therefore, I try to record my thoughts and warmly invite you to share yours! (Jan 4, 2024 Updated)

  • Resource Hub

As a researcher with an interdisciplinary educational background in art and engineering, I work in an emerging and significant field for both the present and the future. However, the knowledge in this area is currently scattered and fragmented. Here, I aim to share some of the tools, links, articles, and other resources I've compiled to help build a more systematic knowledge structure, at least within my field. (Jan 4, 2024 Updated)

So... I'm a designer.

Most of my designs follow the product design and development process, which means starting with research to deeply explore user needs, followed by prototype validation, iterative development, and more. These designs encompass physical product design, app design, CI (Corporate Identity Design) design, VI design (Visual Identity Design) and more.

And... I'm a researcher.

I’m currently focused on research in HCI, especially on understanding the needs of vulnerable groups. My work looks at user behavior and how design and technology can help people live better lives. I’ve done research at Shandong University, Tsinghua University, and the University of Waterloo, mainly on topics like children, education, and healthcare. I am currently a member of the HCI+Health Lab and the Safe Interactions Lab at the University of Waterloo.

Development of BCI-Neurofeedback Cognitive Rehabilitation Games to Support Attention Training for Children with ADHD

Neurofeedback is a promising method for attention training in children with ADHD. In this work, we developed a neurofeedback game called AttentionGo, incorporating creativity to enhance motivation. After consulting instructors, parents, and testing with ADHD children, the game demonstrated great potential for future design improvements.

Exploring the effects of different BCI-based attention training games on the brain: A functional near-infrared spectroscopy study

This study compares the effectiveness of video games (VG) and physical games (PG) in BCI-based attention training, using fNIRS to monitor brain activation. Results show PG activates more brain regions and intrinsic motivation than VG, with notable gender differences. These findings provide insights for designing more effective BCI-based rehabilitation games.

Exploring the Design Space of a Technology-mediated Calm-down Corner

Preschool educators play a key role in helping children manage emotions, but it's challenging to track emotional changes and intervene for every child in a class. This study explores how technology can support educators using "calm-down corners" through interviews and co-design sessions with 22 preschool educators. The findings highlight challenges and provide design insights for future technology-enabled systems to aid emotion regulation.
